Governor Nixon, we the undersigned believe that the facts surrounding the murders of Julie and Robin Kerry on the Chain of Rocks Bridge in 1991 have yet to be fully uncovered. Beatings, forced confessions by the police, prosecutorial misconduct, ineffective counsel and other factors make this a classic case of reasonable doubt. Reggie Clemons has not received due process and justice yet he sits on Missouri’s death row awaiting execution. Please exercise your authority to halt Reggie’s execution and allow the facts to be thoroughly uncovered and reviewed in the case. We cannot let another innocent person be wrongfully executed.

Please note: We recently redesigned the website. If you signed the petition before February 2008, and do not see you signature below, please don’t worry, your signature has been saved and will be forwarded to the Governor at the appropriate time. Please encourage others to sign the petition!

    Dear Governor Blunt,

I am writing to plead with you to halt the execution of Reggie Clemmons. Based on the information I have on his case I believe him to be innocent and am asking for time for his case to be thoroughly investigated.

I have personally seen and know of people who were sentenced for murder and then exonorated. A friend of mine’s brother was accused and sentenced to life in prison for a murder which he did not commit. He was later found to be innocent and released from prison. While we are grateful that he was exonerated the worst case scenario would have been spending his life in prison.

In the case of a death sentence being imposed there is no way to go back, no way to reverse, no way to restore the man’s life.

I am sure that in the interest of justice no one would take a chance like that.

Govenor Blunt, you have the power to stop his execution and allow for the facts of his case to be fully exposed. I am begging you to give him this chance and allow him to live. I am sure you will not regret this decision to choose life.

Thank you for your consideration of this most serious matter.

    Sincerely,

    Linda Austin

please if you believe in jehovah,or god period, spare the life of reggie clemons for the sake that he will spare you your own life, and in the bible it says that human dont have the right to judge each other, and you should leave the judging for him on judgement day who gave u the right to feel that ecution is right, its sad that the people with all this power don’t care about the people they are here to protect and try to cut down the crime not help the rate go up,i bet you don’t go to bed at night knowing that you just killed someones brother, cousin, sister, mom or dad but what if that was a family member of yours would you kill them let say for instance if it was your mother, father, brother would you have the death penility for them u should think about this before considering taking someone eleses life god didn’t put you here to do the judging he said leave that up to him.

I attended the screening of “The Color of Justice” on July 21st at Tivol in St. louis, MO. I’m asking Governor Blunt to please consider the one-hundred and twenty people who have been exonerated and released from death penalty after being found innocent through modern technology. I don’t understand how a person can be on death row in a case that lacks evidence and has so much reasonable doubt. It’s so obvious that there is no justice in this case. The cousin of the two young ladies’ claimed he had been beatened by the police and forced to confess to the murders. The three young black men made the same claims but they were not believed. The white guy got a $150,000 lawsuit settlement, but two of the three black men got the death penalty and one life in prison. The only white guy involved is out on parole. There is clearly a “Color of Justice!!!” in this case. Governor Blunt I’m asking you to please review the facts in this case. I have faith that you wouldn’t want an innocent man to be executed.

  18. Teresa on July 30th, 2008 9:42 am

Governor Blunt,I may better understand this execution if somebody or anybody had to pay for the crimes of these young ladies lives lost or I’ll completely understand if you wanted to bring her family some kind of closure to this tradgedy on both accounts, if that was the case which it very much seems,as well it seems that it was too much pressure built on this high profile case like this that somebody has to pay, not caring who it affects but as long as some kind of justice is served at the end of the day to keep a little skin on your neck,It’s just ashame seeing that his court case transcript has more holes in than Chief Mokwa “not knowing crap” so if putting a innocent man to death makes you feel dictorial than you sir, with no surprise of mine own will have more of burden on your mind and soul than Reginald Clemmons himself you know why? Lord forbidd his head get cold before the truth is known before us but,I’m pretty sure a man in his situation has already made peace with himself and GOD knowing in his heart if it’s his time to it’s his time without control of you or anybody else just knowing the fact his children might not understand the circumstances surrounding his innocence without contamination from the judisical system itself.

It is in the hands of the judicial system to remedy this situation. To refuse to do so under the equitable powers possessed by judges, will lessen all of us who work in the court system. This is a tragic case and my heart goes out to the family of these wrongfully incarcerated men.

Since I discovered the serious irregularities that have marred Troy Davis’ trial - and the decision whether he will be executed on September 23rd is due today - I have started researching all people in death row in the US, and what I am discovering is shocking.

What I have discovered is that it is more important to “produce” a murderer, especially black, for any crime committed, than to investigate fairly, at the “risk” of coming to no conclusion.

That it is better to produce a simulacre of justice by killing a man than admitting to not knowing enough of the facts.

That once a man has been condemned, even if subsequent facts come to light to cast serious doubts about his involvement in a crime, his fate is most likely sealed.

I appeal to justice that Reginald Clemons doesn’t become another textbook case of the execution of another innocent black man.

I appeal to you to give him a new and fair trial.

    Governor Blunt -

Your tenure of hatred and savage inequality is now over. As a last measure of attempting to save face after your debilitating incumbency, consider relieving the innocent and wrongly accused Reggie Clemons from Missouri’s row of death for inmates. In addition to capitol punishment being indecent and crude, it has become an increasingly sensitive case for Mr. Clemons’ imprisonment to continue. This is a rare last chance for a racist conservative like yourself to do a good deed before you leave your office without future opportunities to correct your past wrongs.

I do not thank you for the cuts to education, welfare and health benefits, and I condemn your term as governor as being one of the darkest in civilized Missouri’s history, yet I still offer you a chance for clemency if you agree to do the same for Mr. Clemons.

    Frankly,

    Andrew from MO

    to governor blunt.
people over here in germany are totally horrified because of the death penalities.as a governor you do represent the united states in the whole world.how can you do explain a life for not worth living?how can you take a look in the mirror, and how do you sleep?what kind of example is it you are giving to all of us?shame on you.

    sinje moll - lebens.

    Dear Governor Blunt,

Every 14 days another American is exonerated using DNA evidence. As DNA is only applicable in 15% of the cases, the data strongly points to a high number of factually innocent people incarcerated. Many of them are on death row. For this reason, if for no other, we must put a moratorium on all executions until our justice system can confirm without a reasonable doubt that those sentenced to die are truly guilty.

I beg you to halt Reggie Clemon’s execution and allow the facts to be thoroughly uncovered and reviewed in the case. We cannot let another innocent person be wrongfully executed.

I am Reginald Clemons niece, he was imprisoned when i was 6years old. I can’t remember ever meeting him or having the luxury of having a connection with my fathers brother. I am now 24 years old with two children who will possibly never meeting their uncle. It hurts to know that my uncle was not given a fair trial and their is no hard evidence to prove that the allegations even took place. I truely believe that the accused was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Have americans really come to a point where they just don’t care about the value of an innocent life. I am just another voice of those who understand and know what it is like to lose a family member to an unfair justice system. A confession was given by the cousin of the kerry sister and was competely disregarded and he was actually beaten to tell a lie and paid for it. I just pray that we as ppl come to a point where we can understand our justice system. FIGHT FOR REGGIE better yet fight for an american and stand for something. I love you Uncle reginald

Every human life is worthy and the life of Mr. Reginald Clemons is no different. This man was a child at the time a crime was committed. His life should be valued enough to fully explore the facts of the crime to make sure that justice is being served.

There is nothing here that suggests that this man should be killed. It is my hope and prayer that no innocent person be wrongfully murdered by the state.

Please re-examine the facts of this case. Then evaluate whether the blood of this man should be on your hands.

The death penalty for murder and other “capital” crimes is supposed to provide justice on the “eye for an eye” model–a model that is related more to the emergence of commerce in civilized societies than with any well devised system of morality or legality. Premeditated murder by the state has never, that’s NEVER, worked as either a deterrent or a means of closure for the vengeful survivors of the capital offense. The legendary Nazarene attempted to establish this fact when he thwarted the application of the capital solution upon the hapless adulteress in the Biblical account. He knew it then. It’s time we accepted it now. Execution does not work. Stop executing now.

I know what it’s like to lose a loved one to murder. My 18 yr old sister was murdered by a serial killer (I wrote a book about it). I learned that the death penalty does nothing but damage to the morals we pass on to our children. Reggie’s case is like many that look for a “solution” to the immediate problems of pressure from law enforcement and society to find a quick fix. When are we going to stop acting like angry children on a playground and grow into mature and intelligent adults. We can we abolish the death penalty and join the majority of mankind who has come to its senses?

This man should not be killed due to evidence that has yet to be proven true. All persons should be able to have a chance to start over. The governor of California made the mistake of not allowing “Tookie” Williams to be free even after all of the efforts he put towards improving the community. We need to break the cycle of wrongful deaths of innocent black men in America. The Bible says ” let he without sin cast the first stone”. There is no person who can say that they are perfect or have not commited a sin. In conclusion I type all this to say that Reggie Clemons should be freed and given the second chance that he deserves.

Plusieurs facteurs montrent les injustices de l’affaire : enquête policière incomplète, confessions forcées par la police, avocats inefficaces, manque de preuve, etc.… Permettez à M. Prossecutor Nells Moss has a long well known history of prossecutorial misconduct and the facts in this case poiunt to the cousin of the Kerry sisters as the likely perpetrator. Execution is in my opinion, another form of murder wether guilty or innocent and in this case an innocent man’s life is in your hands. God knows your true motivations, just remember, I my family and friends are lifelong democrats who vote religously in your state. 221. Audrei Chaney on May 27th, 2009 3:33 pm

Govenor Nixon, please stay Reginal Clemons’s execution, with all the surronding doubts on this case there is no way execution is justifiable. The United States is suppose to be embedded with justice for all its citizens. This case has been implicated with errors, bias and doubts. So please, please don’t continue this execution on Clemons. Let the justice system really do the job and review his case carefully.

    Dear Governor Nixon,

There are too many questions unsettled in this case to take the irreversible step of the death penalty. Please reserve the death penalty for cases of absolute certainty. Our legal system must not belittle the death penalty by using it on questionable cases. Doing so reduces its severity in cases that deserve such a sentence.

For the State to proceed with Mr. Clemon’s execution while he is not yet proved to be guilty beyond a shadow of doubt is unconscionable. This case manifests the system at its worst: insidiously bureaucratic, inhumane and oblivous to the ramifications of repeated blunders and frequent miscarriages of justice. The cost to the State’s profile among civilized communities would attend the inescapable stench of its own citizens’ and judiciary’s decaying morality.

In this case I think that the police were in the wrong on what they did. The judgement on this young man does not fit his crime. The police or whomever was over the case failed to look at the evidence thoroughly. Clemons should not be sentenced to death, a fair and honest trial is what he deserves.

This man, who’s childhood has been wrongly stolen from him, at the VERY LEAST, deserves more time to allow the justice system to fix the error. His blood is in your hands now. This poor kids crime is that he is black and a victim of the poor judgement of the justice dept. from top to bottom. Right this wrong now, before it’s too late.

    Is this the Dark Ages?
So, humanity has made no progress at all. (?)
We still live in a system of utter barbarism.
    Senseless insanity.
And at one and the same time, the folk running it tout themselves as ‘Christian’.
Why don’t we simply find some ‘heretics’ to torture and burn, just for pure pleasure…to relieve the bordom.
Why don’t we just install some Great White Sharks to run our political and judicial systems.
It would make it far less animalistic.
THEN maybe, we can say we have made some progress as a species.

May everyone involved in this atrocity conjured amongst slime bed dwellers -

It is within your power to stop this senseless practice of retribution. In this case, we are not even sure if the facts are correct. It has been said that “better 100 guilty men should go free than 1 innocent man be imprisoned”. Surely we should extend this logic to the death penalty where once executed and exonerated person cannot be brought back to life.

  253. Janice Homola on May 28th, 2009 5:47 pm

    Dear Governor,

I am the daughter of a retired Chief of Police and as such have always tried very hard to have faith in the justice system despite the history of this country and quite notably St. Louis, Missouri. It could not be more clear that the system is still painfully flawed, and that we have a long way to go as a human race. I was always taught to be brutally honest, and the brutally honest truth is that this is not justice. We know black people have a reputation of violence, howbeit unfairly broadly applied; but we also know that white people do very wild and risky things that others consider deadly and often cause harm to themselves and others….also. And it gets hidden from the shame. Don’t go to your grave knowing you turned a blind eye to the TRUTH! You put yourself and the community you serve in a prison much worse than the one in which you put others. With respect.

I have only read a small portion of the case files for this capital murder case. Although I am a death penalty support, I am not in support of this death penalty case. Mr Clemons unfairly recieved poor counsel and I truly believe that he and the other young black men were beaten and coerced to sign these confession statements used against them by the police. Ex Gov Matt Blunt is and always will be a conservation governor whom do not care for the plight of young men black or white, however I truly believe that our current Governor Jay Nixon does need to step in and intercede in the excution of this young man. Upon reading this information about the trial there were a great deal of inconsistencies in Mr Cummins story and I personal feel that he had extensive involvement in the death of this two victims. I pray for Mr. Reggie Clemons daily becasue at the time of his conviction the State of Missouri was truly a republican right winged state. I only pray that now that there has been a change in the guard that someone will take the time to listen to this young man’s story and give him the opportunity to his 5th, 6th, and 8th Amendment rights!!!!!!!! Governor Nixon,
Please do the honorable thing in the name of God and justice, and take the time to give Reggie Clemons’ case a fair and thorough review. Our criminal justice system is a great one, but the fact is that more often than we would like to admit, it does allow innocent people to be wrongfully convicted. To put a man to death when there are obviously serious questions about the fairness of his trial would be barbaric in this day and age. Please grant him a stay of execution to allow time to re-evaluate or retry his case.

I stongly oppose this execution! Clearly for unknown reasons the evidence collected in this case is not being used. Seems that some on the legal side of this case may have unknown reasons for sticking with this execution and much of it is embarrassment and not wanting to admit that they have wrongly executed one man and about to execute another in this case.

It’s hard enough to go along with the death penalty even when all the facts and evidence are there to clearly indicate guilt — but when it is clear that the “facts” and “evidence” leave PLENTY of reasonable doubt that Mr. Clemons committed this crime, it is unconscionable and appalling that he is scheduled to be executed. He deserves due process and a fair trial and I pray that you, Gov. Nixon, will have the integrity and humanity (unlike your predecessor in the case of Marlin Gray) to intercede and halt this execution and allow the facts to be thoroughly revealed and true justice to be served. My prayer is that this situation be resolved in a perfect way according to God’s will.

The two white people were basically exonerated yet the others who are black are either on death row or has been lethally injected. Please I beg of you look into this case with your eyes wide open not wide shut as before. I think just because they were black and the girls were white, they got the short end of the stick, the police needed an open and shut case. the cousin had a thing for the girl, and what better way after rejection but to blame it on the black guys. he said he was ordered to jump, yet he was dry, no residue from the water in his hair, the water was freezing cold, yet he suffered no hypothermia, he failed a polygraph, both men were beaten into confession, yet the cousin was awarded 150,000 but the black guy wasnt. None of the guys were given a fair trial at all. Please stop the execution of Reginal Clemmons.

There can be no justice with out truth. In many criminal cases, especially murder where the primary witnesses are deceased, it is difficult to know the truth. In those cases, we must be able to depend upon the integrity and truth in the process. This process has been devoid of the requistite integrity and truth to lead to a just decision; and if justice is what we seek then we must stay this execution to avoid the certain injustice of discrediting the system and the possible injustice of more innocent death. We run in pursuit of revenge; but we walk in the pursuit of justice.

Resonable doubt is plausible in Mr. Clemons case. No one should face a punishment of death nor be convicted based on the inconsistent and coerced evidence presented. At a minimal Reginald Clemons life should be spared. A communtation to life will to at least give the opportunity have the evidence fairly evaluated. We cannot let another innocent person be wrongfully executed.

is being displayed toward him.If you believe in God then tell me and everyone else that’s familiar
with this situation why are you taking this young
African Americans life when you know that he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time and is
being used to satisfy another example of Racism in

Missouri received a D+ for its education system. It needs an F for its INJUSTICE system. This case is filled with so many holes. It is as if we have forgotten how to think critically about situations. Perhaps this is because we never really learned. Thinking critically are not inherrent standards in our education systems. We need to add critical thinking to all our curriculums-including law school. It seems we are turning out prosecutors who cannot think well. All of this reminds me of what is going on in the remembering of Tienneman Square in China. Information is getting squashed over there. Oh yeah, but they are not a democracy. And we are????

Some weeks ago, I was driving down a street by my home and the phrase “racial profiling” dropped in my spirit, I asked God what the reason was or why-all of a sudden this story surfaced and something starts to stir, I’m no Attorney, just a concerned citizen, a Mother, and a child of God (one of which I take pride in being) as a lot of us, many say we are, but can’t even say, “hello” to our neighbor! I don’t know all the details of this situation, and I am not a judge of a persons’ life, or their destiny, but I know who is, I pray that you will grant favor to Reggie Clemmons and that a trial be given to him. I believe that in listening to his interview there are missing pieces to the “puzzle” that may have been overlooked…it’s not my specialty, I’m just from the outside looking in, but like Esther went before the King for favor for her people, so am I coming before you to obtain favor on behalf of this child.

After reading about this case it would appear that one innocent person has already been executed for this tragedy, and now there is to be another innocent person executed for said same tragedy, please look into this case again, if after finding without a doubt that Reginald Clemons is guilty, then go ahead and do what has to be done, but, if he is not guilty you have to set him free. I would not be able to sleep at night if I thought I was in some way responsible for the death of another human being whether by my hand or not.

Gov.Jay Nixon can turn this around I voted for Nixon and I was told he would reinvistigate the Clemons case.
The prosecutor(Moss)is a racist. The White boy who was convicted with Reggie clemons, was granted parole, now how does that happen? The death penalty is not administer fairly and that’s why we should get rid of this goverment sanction murder. review the facts, the evidence talk to the cousin of the Kerry sisters again (he failed the polygraph, and he had a crush on his cousins) He said he was forced to jump off the bridge but, his hair showed no signs of river residue. There are so many unfair and questionable issues in the case against Mr. Clemons. It has never been proved that he was guilty. I believe the right thing to do is to spare his life. Why not allow this young man to get another trial. Imagine if this was your child. What would you want. If nothing else, please suspend the execution and review the case.

  504. Christie Lyons on June 5th, 2009 6:57 pm

    Dear Mr. Blunt,

In order for us to move forward as a people and a country, we need to have laws and law enforcement officials that are working FOR the American citizen and not against them. We have come to a new road in US political history, and with our new administration, we can change anything, but lethal injection isn’t the way to do it. No one except the people who were on that bridge really know what happened. Something about this case never “smelled” right from the beginning and the families of those 2 young ladies need to know the truth about what really happened that evening. It’s not fair to these families not actually knowing what happened. How do you think they would feel finding out later after Mr. Clemons death, that he wasn’t guilty and he was telling the truth. Lethal injection just isn’t the answer in this case. To put a man to death and then find out after he has been lethally injected would be a cruel unjustice. The officials wanted to wrap this case up quick, and the handling of this case proves this without a doubt.

  505. R Wallace on June 5th, 2009 7:14 pm

As I listened to Reggie speak yesterday on Majic 104.9 with Tony Scott & Tammie Holland, I was in tears. I have been following this story since it happened and I always believed in Reggie’s innocence. There has always appeared to me to be too many holes in the case and Tom Cummins confession early on was a dead ringer!!!!

Please allow for Mr. Clemons to receive a fair trial. He derserves it, his family and friends deserve it and we the people ddeserve to know what really happened on the night of April 4, 1991.

    Dear Gov. Nixon,
I am pleading with you to allow more time for the judicial system to thoroughly examine all evidence in this case. At this point, there are too many discrepancies that EXIST to EXECUTE Reggie Clemons!!! Please issue stay of execution, it seems to me that INJUSTICE has occurred against Reggie. I am praying for all parties involved, this is a sad case!! It hurts my heart to believe that race is still a major factor in 2009 in regarding fair, and equal representation in the judicial system.

  513. Lakisha Hadley on June 5th, 2009 11:37 pm

Free Reggie…. there shouldn’t be a execution because being in jail is execution enough, so scheduling to kill someone for something that wasn’t looked into more as far as evidence is not right. Nobody deserves to die in the hands of another “man”…. Let the lord handle this situation…

  522. Jeanne Lloyd on June 6th, 2009 9:46 am

    Governor Blunt,

I come begging in the name of Jesus that you give Reginald Clemmons his life that he had no chance to live because as a young man fresh out of high school didn’t have the good judgement of the environment or circumstance he put himself in. What we have here is not just a man that is guilty of a crime he didn’t commit but a man that was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. When the crime took place in 1991 I had a child a son just a year old now he’s 18 and a graduate of Ft. Zumwald South. I am very proud of my son and couldn’t fathom something this horific to happen to him and our life and our family. Please all we ask is that you give him a chance. Just put yourself in their shoes….what if this were your son and you knew deep in your heart he was innocent but because of actions of other people, corrupt people he was being put to rest. Who in their right mind has the justification to do something like that to a human being. I ASK YOU WHO? We know our children and we have that sixth scent when it comes to our children we would have that intuition that tells us if they’re being honest as well as if they were telling a lie. Give Reginald a chance…..give his family a chance…most of all GIVE YOURSELF AND I a chance for the further or our children and grandchildren to come. Let’s make this a better place, it’s time for a change, it’s time for a CHANCE! May God Bless you and yours and MAY God keep us all. Jeanne

(1) execution is off the table in all 1st world countries except the U.S. and Israel (2) this man may be innocent (3) murder by State is still murder. Worse than legal murder because it sets a public example for children. If the governor can do it to someone the State doesn’t like, why can’t I?

  527. Joan Stanford on June 6th, 2009 11:48 am

At our Mendocino Film Festival last Saturday, Danny Glover, before accepting an award, told the audience about this case. It is hard to be caught up in the joys of our own lives when an injustice is about to happen.Having gone on the internet to learn more I cannot believe this person is scheduled to be executed. Please demonstrate the moral courage to reconsider.

  528. Teresa W. on June 6th, 2009 11:49 am

My name is Teresa and I am writing to ask for clemency for Reggie Clemons.

I may better understand this execution if somebody or anybody had to pay for the crimes of these young ladies lives lost or I’ll completely understand if you wanted to bring her family some kind of closure to this tradgedy on both accounts, if that was the case which it very much seems,as well it seems that it was too much pressure built on this high profile case like this that somebody has to pay, not caring who it affects but as long as some kind of justice is served at the end of the day to keep a little skin on your neck,It’s just ashame seeing that his court case transcript has more holes in than Chief Mokwa “not knowing crap” so if putting a innocent man to death makes you feel dictorial than you sir, with no surprise of mine own will have more of burden on your mind and soul than Reginald Clemmons himself you know why? Lord forbidd his head get cold before the truth is known before us but,I’m pretty sure a man in his situation has already made peace with himself and GOD knowing in his heart if it’s his time to it’s his time without control of you or anybody else just knowing the fact his children might not understand the circumstances surrounding his innocence without contamination from the judisical system itself.

Indeed, two federal judges reviewing the case found that Reggie did not receive a fair trial and

    voted to overturn his sentence.

Although Reggie’s case has been through the appeals process, many of his claims have never

been heard because of strict procedural rules that have made it impossible for him to present

    important evidence in his defense.

For the last eighteen years, Reggie has sat in prison awaiting justice. He has now run out of

appeals and his life is in your hands. Only you have the power to right this terrible wrong. I

respectfully ask that you give your full attention to this case and that you act to save Reggie’s

    life.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

    Sincerely,

    Teresa Williams

I do not believe in the death penalty; neither do I believe that Reggie is guilty. I never have believed he was guilty. I remember the case like it was yesterday and felt sick at the stomach as to how it was handled. I won’t say who I believe did it, but I don’t believe, with all my heart, mind, body and soul that Reggie was guilty of murder. I’ve prayed for those young men from day one and asked God to let justice prevail. I know God is real, yet he’s sovereign. According to the first verse of Proverbs 21, God can turn the heart of our leaders if he so desires. The righteous ones are fervently praying; and we expect our prayer to avail much. Freeing Reggie would be the right thing to do. This is America. We’re supposed to be going forward in justice, love and peace. Let’s at least attempt to make the crooked places straight, make the darkness light, and make the wrongs right!!!!!!!

  557. Ms. SLA on June 7th, 2009 9:39 am

Govner Blunt, I am pleading and asking you to stop the excution of Reggie Clemons. I have followed this case for years now and I am appalled at our justice system. How could we as american citizens allow our people in power to be so dishonest to boost their careers. Moss is a good example of an evil, prejudice, lieing, career hungry human being. I do not want to say this is racist, but we have to call it as it is. You know the case, so I won’t go into it. But, if there is any justice left in Mo. you can be the one to at least help Reggie to get a fair trail and not be executed for something he did not do and you will bring the cousin and Winfrey back to trail for witnesses or the cousin for the murders.

  558. ELLE on June 7th, 2009 12:21 pm

Jay Nixon needs to do the right thing and don’t let an innocent man die. This week on Fox News Rivera stated “law enforcement needs to look beyond the accusations when a white female accuses a black male of a crime”. This is not intended to be a racist statement, it is a fact.

Nixon, do the right thing and pass this case on to the MO Attny General to review. And if you cannot bring yourself to pass it on, this I can only pray that he is man enough to exercise his power and take it. The White House is focused on stopping water boarding which was used on 3 terrorist/criminals and our local government finds it acceptable to brutally beat and kill innocent Americans!

Help America understand what is right and more important!

No one has a right to take life, that goes for the state. particularly the state which should be exemplary in its treatment of all human beings. When there are as many questions asked as appear to be here that emphasises the argument for not killing people. An African American. How many more will be executed by states in the U.S. It appears barbaric to me living in the United Kingdom in 2009. Stop now!

    Dear Gov. Nixon,
I am writing to ask you to please review the case
for Reginald Clemmons. His family has been faithful in trying to get him a new trail that all of the evidence are apparent. Many of us voted for you (the black community) because we have found you to be FAIR to the the black community. You see things that others have turned their backs on. I am confident that you will review this case and make the right decision.
Our prayers are with the family and for you.

There is too much unfairness in this world and prosecuting an innocent man is not justice. If there is fault I believe the cousin who drove the girls to their death should be more at fault, if anyone was to blame it was him. Everyone was wrong in the role they played that night but death for one should be death for them all. It seems to me that the cousin was rewarded for his part in this and the others were punished. From the most ancient of Roman/European times, public executions, crucifixions, assassinations and blatant murders of innocent individuals (as well as the guilty)have been rampant, and unfortunately, a most effective tool used to inflict psychological slavery into the lives, minds and hearts of the masses. The “need” (which springs forth from the power elite)to put Brother Reggie Clemons to death is a continuation of that age-old fear tactic: Keep the masses in CHECK, by any means necessary. Even at the expense of the innocent.

History is reflective of the many souls of men who were taken away via a fascist system of control, disguised as democracy, equality and justice. And for the masses of the conscious people who are familiar with the in-your-face methods of control by execution or imprisonment, it is OUR responsibility to put a hault to this open warfare on our brothers and sisters caught up within the ranks of those scheduled to be publicly–as well as privately–executed.

The American judicial system is one that has been set up for the protection of the wealthy Anglo-European male and his heirs, and the propagation and evolution of their colonialistic way of life. Any law that we “transgress” in the eyes of the caucasion american male is a transgression against their way of life. And at some point, that very same system found Brother Reggie to be an immenant threat or disturbance to that way of life.

We, as a body of conscious, God loving people are now called to task to aid in freeing of Brother Reggie from this incessantly oppressive and murderous system that deems African Americans as a whole as a significant threat to their antiquated and primal train of thought and way of life.

Brother Reggie Clemons MUST be freed, not just given clemency if he is indeed innocent of the alleged charges and subsequent conviction, for as history has shown us so very clearly, the Christians were fed to lions for merely believing (and knowing) that Jesus the Christ was, and is, the Son of GOD!! Are we to mimmic that very same psychologically debillitating behavior time-and-time again, centuries later? When does it end? We MUST learn to stand up for our HUMAN rights as a people, regardless of what the system deems as protocol. A luta continua. . .The struggle continues!

It deeply saddens me to know that this has been going on for as long as it has. And to find out that in one week and one day from the day I found out had me almost in tears. However I just came on the site today and found out that the death penalty had been stayed. Please let me know anything I can do to help and I will begin sending out bulletins via myspace and facebook.

    Dear Reggie,
Praise God for His continued faithfulness in your pressing and distressing situation. In Deuteronomy chapter thirty one verse six, we are reminded of the words that Moses spoke to the Nation of Israel as they were about to embark upon the promise land, “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will noit leave you nor forsake you.” Please know as you hide these words of comfort in your heart, our Lord and Savior keeps His Word. All that is required of you is to BELIEVE!! “May the Lord bless you and keep you: The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”

I am against the death penalty. We must allow God’s grace to work on the heart of people. I was involved with another young man by the name of Reggie who had a IQ of 60 or below. He met his death by the hands of the state.

This young man needs another “fair” trial and even though he was with the others, he should not face the death penalty.

  639. Mark Chapman on June 11th, 2009 6:26 am

I believe, that a non thourough trial, and ignoring facts, just because one can. Is a miscarriage of justice. I thinnk this person may not be guilty. If, I am wrong? My bible states thates that Jesus will not hold it against me, if I have been fooled. However, if I was not being tricked, but those responsible sent this person to his death. Then, I will be just as guilt in Gods eyes of murder as the one accused of murder.

I agree with all the above.
It is said, “It is better to let five guilty men go free than to kill one innocent man.”
It is clear to me that this case at least needs to be re-examined. There are too many things that I can see that is wrong. I can only imagine how many things I have not been allowed to see that is truely wrong and questionable.
It does not amaze me that a lot of non African American people just refuse to open their eyes to this government system. They quickly judge and believe whatever the media, legal authoritys and government feeds them without even having a notion that they could be wrong.
This upsets me a great deal, and there is much work to be done.
How can one decide anothers fate and rest with that decision,…if all the facts are not examined and brought to light????

I am in this campaign to see justice done for Reggie. He is innocent and if the state let the first person who confessed to this crime (Thomas Cummins cousin of the victims) retract his (supposed beaten into confession). How is it that he is now free and the state is bent on punishing Reggie Clemons and the others, who they know is not guilty of anything. I speak from experience because I was recently exonerated August 2008, after serving 24 years in a Missouri State Prison for a murder I did not commit. I can tell you exactly how the police and prosecutors fabricate so-called “FACTS” in these kind of cases. My question is why hasn’t this Thomas Cummins come under more scrutiny and questioning these past years, months and weeks? Also I have never heard of a case that all of the defendants are “accomplices”, no one has been targeted as the actual murder in this case according to my understanding. If this is true this is worse case of injustice I have ever seen. Stay strong “Reggie Clemons” we are praying and working hard to see you set free my brother. I’ve been there and I know how you feel!

Why are the caucasians free? Did you make sure everyone had a lie detector test?and if one told several deceptive stories why let him go? there are millions of cases that go unsolved You dont have to bring closure to that family because you feel its right to wrongfully accuse. maybe that was the girls plan all along…to commit suicide? if nobody pushed them, you dont have enough evidence point blank. Let me close like this, My GOD knows what happened, and the bible says vengence is mine and if you are truly judging this case wrong it will come back on you and I truly hope Its not with one of your own. may GOD BLESS. 663. Don Bissell on June 12th, 2009 11:24 pm

I am a white guy distressed at the apparent general imbalance and specific implication of Reginald Clemons in this case. It is clear that we’ve put innocent people to death in prior cases. And though our judicial system may be good and perhaps better than most, sadly, we cannot admit that it is failsafe. I fear that Reggie’s sentence is a mistake. If it is, then we are all collectively responsible and complicit.

Reggie’s case is a particularly poignant example where circumstances, opinion, fact and due process have spun out of control. Result: A perfect storm.

Let’s err on the side of caution and rethink this case.

I am writing in support of Reggie Clemons, who is scheduled to be executed on June 17, 2009 for a murder that has not been proved through forensic or eye-witness evidence and/or testimony, that he is guilty of. This is just another classic example of racism in America, even with an African-American, recently voted into office as president of the U.S., it is clear that Mr. Clemons was not given a fair trial, as the majority of the jurors were Caucasian, not to mention the fact that a white “witness” was paid-off to tell lies about Mr. Clemons.

Until we begin to unite, fight, demonstrate and show racial unity, African-American men, women and children will continue to be persecuted by a hate-filled so-called White America.

Dear Gov. Nixon, while reviewing this case I am not surprised how easy it is for an African American to be railroaded into a death penalty. The corrupted police officers with the brutality to get the type of force confession they want, the lack of evidence, the injustice that only African American were given the fatal penalties when others were involved and the fact that this being going on for years and the Judicial System seems as if nothing is wrong.Although, this type of misconduct have been going on for years and it is weell over do to stop this injustice.Gov. Nixon this is 2009 and we elected you as the govenor of the people and hope and demand you do the right, just and humane thing. Let your conscious guide you while evaluating the lack of evidence, police brutality and the racial tone of this case and I’m sure you will see this is not justice that you want your name on. How many victims does the State of Missouri need to make by being negligent to look at all the facts? Please reopen this case and allow the truth to come out.

  680. David Paquette on June 14th, 2009 9:40 am

  681. Jackie Kaiser on June 14th, 2009 9:59 am

    Governor Nixon,

Please stay this execution. There are too many questions in this case to execute Reggie. Have mercy and let him have a new trial.

  693. Rev. Madeline Coburn on June 14th, 2009 11:54 pm

I am requesting that Gov. Jay Nixon grant clemency to Mr. Reginald Clemons. It is a known fact that as governor you are in a position to do the righteous act towards Mr. Clemons and his family.

What concerns Missouri citizens that have come to learn about the injustices in Mr. Clemons case is that he never had a trial, he was denied DNA, there is no physical evidence linking him to a rape or murder, and your former position as AG requesting an execution date for Mr. Clemons and now that you’re elected as the Chief Executive Officer (Governor) over the state of Missouri how can you not appoint a Board of Inquiry to review his legal case?

It’s a known fact that Reginald Clemons is an innocent man. It would be a miscarriage of justice and a illegal homicide if he is not granted clemency and a new trial.

As it is written, there will be a historical breach that will take place ocncerning this case and it will expose the injustices that have occurred in Mr. Reginald Clemons wrongful conviction that will set a precedent in our criminal justice system. (ACTS 12)

After reading the article that accompanied this website I was very troubled byt the length of unjustice this young man has faced. I urge you to suppport this young man and do whats right. The purpose for every person on this planet is to help as many people as they can. Politicans in power tend to forget the power they have, influence they project, and the backgrounds where they come from. I ask that you take a look at the evidence and there would be no doubt that Rginald is not only innocent but he has faced enough in regards to this case. Thank you for your time and the possible change that you will make.

PLEAE GIVE REGINALD A FAIR TRIAL. PROVE THAT THINGS HAVE CHANGED - SHOW THAT THE JUSTICE IS A FAIR SYSTEM. All was not heard in this case for Reginald. This is just another form of lynching (in 2009). Too many facts that were not heard in the case - Reginald didn’t even get to testify in his own behalf. He and the others were beaten into submission. He was beaten to a point, that the judge ordered him taken to the hospital (there are pictures documenting his face) but yet this was ignored. So many of our black men have been jailed & found innocent, released. What if they were put to death. Can’t bring them back, even though they were innocent. Many of our black men were/have been jailed and put to death for a crime they didn’t commit - ONLY GOD CAN GIVE AND TAKE LIFE - this is not man’s decision. This has happened to thousands of our black men - What happened to the cousin - Cummins - he made the original confession. He claimed he was in the water but there’s documentation on film while in the ambulance that he wasn’t even wet - yet this is ignored by our justice system. There’s so, so, so much more to this case - and our justice system is not listening - just ignoring. Just another black man, just another other one. May God forgive them, for they evidently don’t know what they’re about to do.

This case is a textbook example of when the death penalty should NOT be applied. There are too many unknowns and too many disputed facts for an irreversible sentence of DEATH.

And if later, facts become more clear or if further evidence is introduced, you will not be able to reverse your decision. There are just too many possibilities for error in this case. Please consider clemency so that Reggie will not die for the imperfections of the justice system.

I am aware that politicians have to be tough on crime when they are seeking election or re-election and that’s what happened here in Reggie Clemons case. The charges he was falsly convicted of needs to be dismissed. Reggie needs an attorney that is not scarred to come up against the judicial system and fight for what their ethic code of conduct teaches them to do.

I do realize that Reggie is sentenced to die for a crime he did not commit. So, what about you Gov. Jay Nixon are you willing to commit a crime of murder to an innocent man instead of granting clemency or is your political position more valuable than Reggie Clemons life?

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WOULD LIKE FOR GOVERNOR JEREMIAH “JAY” NIXON TO GRANT REGINALD BYRON CLEMONS CLEMENCY IN 2009.

Why is it when you are black you are guilty until proven innocent, and when you are white you are innocent until proven guilty. Thomas cummins should still be in jail based on his initial confession he knows what happened. You already let one person die because you wanted to have sex with your own cousin. As an american I have complete faith in our justice system, however sometimes it is necessary to point out the flaws. I have read and seen many of the notes, videos, and testimonies from the event on the Chain of Rocks Bridge. I cannot see where Reggie Clemons is “guilty beyond a resonible doubt”. DNA will either prove or disregard that Reggie was involved to the extent that is being said. I do not believe there is enough evidence to prove that. As far as I can tell it is all circumstantial. There needs to be another, completely unbiased trial.

In the face of overwhelming doubt, a tremendous injustice will prevail without your intervention.

If you have any respect for life and justice, then please use the power bestowed on you to grant clemency to Reginald Clemons.

All eyes are on Missouri! What message are you willing to send regarding that values that you espouse on behalf of you state?

This was a horrible ordeal for both the victims and the other victims(Reggie, Tony, and Marlon). I have followed this case being really close friends with Antonio Richardson and this was really a bias case. The state just wanted to place blame on anyone and it just so happened they found 3 black men who they could use. Tom Cummings testimony changed more than the weather but no one cared. How could Mr Moss sleep at night after all of this?

We live in a world where society wants us to forget about what white people did to us…Look at what they are still doing to US! Why isn’t this case shown on Nancy Grace or any of the other Court TV shows? It makes me believe that the reason it is NOT is because they know that they would have to over turn the verdict and pay some money to the wrongly convicted. The sad thing about it that I doubt it the Reggie and his family wants money…They probably only wants the TRUTH and that would be his FREEDOM!!! Be blessed Ms. Thomas

NAACP Requests Governor Jay Nixon to Appoint Board of Inquiry and Seeks Clemency to Stop Unjust Execution

NAACP National Board Member Harold Crumpton and NAACP Missouri State Conference President Mary Ratliff are requesting Governor Jay Nixon appoint a Board of Inquiry and grant clemency to Reggie Clemons.

Clemons, 37, is an African-American man sentenced to death for the 1991 murder of two young women who drowned after plunging from the Chain of the Rocks Bridge into the Mississippi River. There was no physical evidence linking Reggie to the crime for which he received the death penalty: no fingerprints, no DNA, no hair or fiber samples. Reggie’s case is filled with many injustices, including police brutality, gross prosecutorial misconduct and ineffective defense counsel.

“Reggie Clemons was tortured by police into making a statement that was used against him at trial. But even after five hours of violent interrogation, he never confessed to murder,” stated NAACP National Board Member Harold Crumpton. “The two eyewitnesses failed to link Clemons to the murder. One of them initially confessed to the killing, and the other one got a sweetheart deal for his testimony. The other evidence was Clemons’ confession which was induced by hours of torture.” Crumpton said.

“Governor Nixon should convene a Board of Inquiry immediately and grant clemency for Reggie Clemons. More than 20% of black defendants who have been executed in the U.S. were convicted by all-white juries. Although St. Louis is more than 50 percent African American, there were only two black people on Reggie’s jury,” stated Mary Ratliff, NAACP Missouri State Conference President.

“It is wrong to put to death someone who clearly might be innocent. Our nation and our State are better than that. It is not only unjust for Reggie but for the families of the victims who deserve to have the real killers punished. Executing the innocent is a mistake that cannot be rectified,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.

The Missouri State Conference of the NAACP is calling on supporters to fax (573-751-1588), send letters and emails to Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and to sign a petition for clemency for Reggie Clemons at http://www.justiceforreggie.com.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

I recently heard Dr. Angela Davis discuss issues of institutional warehousing of black men by an unjust criminal justice and penal system and was absolutely floored not only by her concise and compassionate collection of data, but by the critical and dispassionate message it delivers. We will NEVER be credible leaders of the free world either politically, socially or morally as long as we continue to tolerate such heinous persecution and inappropriate exercise of power in this country. The type of treatment is an inequitable as those countries we criticize and in which we seen to intervene. It’s about hypocrisy and as ugly is the word, its practice is even uglier.

  811. Karen L. Fink on July 23rd, 2009 7:15 pm

    Dear Govenor Nixon:

You have the power to intervene for justice by preventing the execution of Reginald Clemons.

If you fail to use your authority, and this young man is murdered by the State of Missouri, and later exonerated, all of us will bear responsibility for an unspeakable state crime.

In the face of overwhelming doubt, an irreversible and tragic injustice is has its marching orders.

Use your power and human decency to immediately grant clemency to Reginald Clemons.

One of the founding principles of this great nation is that it is better for a guilty man to go free than for an innocent man to be punished.

Do not violate our ethical, legal and moral obligation to every citizen.

As evidenced by the recent exoneration of Josh Kezer, illegally kept imprisoned in Jefferson City prisons for a decade and a half for a murder that he didn’t commit, mistakes are made in our legal system. Moreover, not just mistakes, but the purposeful twisting of the justice system. Don’t allow an innocent man to be put to death in this state. This case needs proper investigation. Whatever one thinks about the death penalty, no one can be in favor of executing someone who has strong claims of innocence. It does not bring justice to the family of the victims, the defendant, nor the family and loved ones of the defendant. All parties involved with this tragic case need to demand that full investigation be done so that the truth is on the table. It is incomprehensible that anyone would want less than the truth.

After doing a exstensive and complete paper for a law class, and the information about Nels Moss jr. and the action by his office in the matter of prosecutorial misconduct, any case that was prosecuted by him should be looked at very closely and if the death sentence is involved it should automatically be sent back to the lower court for retrial with a change of venue and special prosecutor with inpeckable reputation to prosecute the case. As you are aware, the issue of prosecutorial misconduct was argued before the highest court in the land.(11/4/09) It will be interesting to see how the justices decide this case of egregious act by prosecutors who knowingly and intentionally fabricate or hide/destroy or tamper with exculpatory evidence

I worked for the Justice Department for several years. The INJUSTICE which has derailed Reggie Clemons’ life is Constitutionally intolerable. All citizens deserve the full power and original meaning behind the Constitution as their protection beyond a reasonable doubt. Mr. Clemons, as well as the citizens of MO, were denied this as a result of this improperly handled nightmare.

As a man who knows the right thing to do, deep down in your soul, as you would want for any member of your family had they received INJUSTICE, I implore you to grant him clemency.

Govenor Nixon, I understand that your career was built on being tough on crime, that is what prosecutors do. The question for you is if getting the conviction is more important than getting the person that committed the crime. The politics of crime has skewed our Justice System into a tool to further political careers instead of a search for justice.
If you allow Reggie Clemmons to be executed you will be guilty of committing murder of an innocent man because his trial was not a fair trial and as of yet the state has not truely proven him guilty. In your heart I am sure you feel empathy for all the victims you worked to get justice for. When you allow a miscarrige of justice you create another victim and cheat the original victims of the justice they deserve.

    Dear Govenor Nixon,
Please do n’t execute Reginald Clemons without giving him a fair hearing and investigation. I plead with you to uphold justice as this was your vow be-fore God and the public you serve. This man is innocent and has not received any justice in the courts. Please don’t be an accomplice to another “legal lynching” as we know has happened often in the U. S. penal system.

Gaping holes in this conviciton of Reggie Clemont is an absolute disgrace to the rights of Human Justice fought for every day on this planet. The brazen confidence of the prosecutor alone, plus the flawed witnesses, tells the world of the shameful form of justice still practiced in the US. “What kind of example for a supposedly fair; democratic, teacher of Human Dignity in this powerful nation.”

Please grant clemency for Reginald Clemons. The case against him sounds flawed to the extreme.

    Governor Blount,

Please stop the execution of Reggie Clemons before it is too late. Time is needed to firmly establish the facts of this case. Please take that time. What a tragic mistake it would be if an innocent man’s life is taken. That is what is at stake here. Our nation’s belief -that every human life is valuable- cries out for the halting of this execution and getting ALL pertinent information that is lacking.

    Thank you,

    Dear Governor:

We the undersigned believe that the facts surrounding the murders of Julie and Robin Kerry on the Chain of Rocks Bridge in 1991 have yet to be fully uncovered.

    Governor Nixon:

Please exercise your authority to halt Reggie’s execution and allow the facts to be thoroughly uncovered and reviewed in the case. This petition does not seek to argue the validity of the death penalty. Rather, it asserts that Reggie has not received due process in his trial.

We cannot let another innocent person be wrongfully executed. Please do not be responsible for this innocent man’s death.

    Sincerely,

    Mallory Rusch
    St. Louis, MO
